Vashti Bunyan: From Here To Before (Kieran Evans) with Adem & Friends

Film & Music Arena

Saturday 18th July, 2009
11:00 - 13:15

For many cult artists, rediscovery comes too late, they never live to know their art has been reappraised and loved by generations not even born when they were at work.

In the case of Vashti Bunyan, the “Godmother of Freak Folk”, thirty years of obscurity ended with the rediscovery of her lost classic album “Just Another Diamond Day” and her subsequent reintroduction into a mainstream she was never part of in the first place. The fact the record was inspired by an end to end journey across the country by horse and carriage - has only helped mythologise Vashti’s life and career.

‘From Here To Before’ is a gorgeously shot and wonderfully evocative film that retraces Vashti’s extraordinary journey across the British Isles and sets it against the backdrop of her first high profile London concert. The screening at Latitude will be followed by a unique performance from Adem and friends of music and songs inspired by the journey.

Adem presents Music and Song Inspired by The Journey.

From rehearsing and performing with Vashti for her first ever performance after thirty five years at the RFH through to recording with her on her acclaimed second album 'Lookaftering' through to contributing an
incisive interview to the film 'From Here To Before', Adem has contributed to Vashti Bunyan's incredible story in many different ways over the last six years. To celebrate the screening of 'From Here To Before' at Latitude,
Adem will be assembling a number of musical cohorts to perform a set of music inspired by the journey Vashti undertook on a horse and cart from London to the Outer Hebrides forty years ago. We hope you enjoy the ride.
