Friday 17th July, 2009Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew
One of the greatest of all comic battle of the sexes, the plot centres on the marriage plans of the beautiful Bianca and her fiery tempered older sister Katharine. Customary for the older sister to wed first. Bianca is in for a long wait as no one is lining up to marry Kate, until Petruchio that is.
In town shopping for a rich wife this would be husband from hell falls in love with the fiery femme and, swearing to tame her employs extremely questionable methods. Katherine however is no pushover but after a furious, aggressive, and combative courtship they marry.
This battle between the sexes makes the sitcom ‘Men Behaving Badly’ look tame by comparison and you are invited to hiss, scream, boo, cheer and throw things depending on whose side you are on. But above all laugh, it’s only a play.
